This family tree has been researched over the last ten years and wonderful discoveries made with just a few names to start with. Our trip to Poland in 2008 enabled us to gather more information about these families both from newly found relatives and records in Warsaw and Gniezno. There is still a great deal of research required and we are currently trying to link together all the Ratuszny families from the Gniezno area of Poland. This is a work in progress.

First Generation

Katarzyna was born 11 November 1838 in Gniezno Poland, died on 12 Nov 1925 at 6am in Tzemesj 80 Gneizno Poland at age 83, and was buried on 15 Nov 1925 in Gniezno Nowy Cmentarz (Fara).

Elzbieta RATUSZNA [19] was born on 19 Feb 1877 in Gneizno Poland at noon., died on 29 Mar 1955 in Gniezno, Poland at 1.15 pm at age 78, and was buried in St Michala's Cemetery, Gneizno, Poland. The cause of her death was Blood on brain.

General Notes: Lived at Cierpeigi 13, Gniezno from 1924 -1939 and from 1945 - 1954 at Z.Wigory 16, Gniezno, with Edward and Julia. Elzbetia died on 29/3/1955 at home at 13.15hrs, received the last sacraments Grave 129/55 St Michala Cemetery - Sw Krzyza, Gniezno, Poland

Roman WOLINSKI [21] was born in 1918 in Gniezno, Poland and died on 24 Dec 1940 in Gniezno, Poland at age 22 in a truck accident.

Fifth Generation (Great-Grandchildren)

Sylvester WOLINSKI [20] was born in Gniezno, Poland and died in 1942 in Poznan, Poland. He was mauled to death by SS Gestapo dogs.

Birth Notes: Headmaster in Gniezno Boy's School

Death Notes: Died in the hands of the Gestapo- captured while transcribing "Mein Kampf" - mauled to death by dogs.

General Notes: Headmaster, school for children in the village of Lulkowo and Jankowo near Gniezno.
Sylvester being an academic decided to translate Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and write a contra ideology. This activity was noted by pro Nazi sympathizers prior to WW11. When the war began and the Germans reached Gniezno, the Nazis were informed of this and he was placed on the list of persons to be found and executed. The German Political Police began to search for Sylvester who with his wife went into hiding. As the search became more intense Sylvester fled Gniezno and lived with Ludwik, his brother, in Poznan. Ludwik was an engine driver and hid his brother and Janina stayed in Gniezno. The Germans were patient and kept searching, knowing that the family in Gniezno would know of his whereabouts. Sylvester survived in hiding for nearly three years then as the search widened he was discovered in Poznan. He was imprisoned in a building called "Dom zolnierza" in Poznan, (Soldier's House), Ul. Mlynska, which is now a theatre. Here the Gestapo placed him in a cell and then set their dogs onto him. He died from the mauling, 1942.
His wife Janina was taken from Gniezno at the time of his capture, she was being used as a bait for his return, and sent to Auschwitz where she died in 1943.

Sylvester married Janina [74] [MRIN: 30]. Janina died in 1943 in Auschwitz, Poland. The cause of her death was probable gas chamber.

Ludwik WOLINSKI [22] was born in Gniezno, Poland, died in 1975, and was buried in Junikowo Cemetery, Poznan, Poland.

Birth Notes: Engine Driver Poznan, Poland

General Notes: Ludwik was slightly handicapped but worked as an engine driver and lived at Ul. Swieza 4, Poznan. His house was destroyed in the war. He helped his brother Sylvester to hide from the Germans. The destruction of this house was more an act of retribution as Poznan was not bombed during the war as the Germans had decided that this would be the new Capital of conquered Poland.

Ludwik married Bogna ZIELINSKI [27] [MRIN: 12], daughter of ZIELINSKI [183] and Ona KUREK [184]. Bogna was born in Gniezno, Poland and died in 1989 in Poznan, Poland.

Stanislawa WOLINSKI [17] was born in 1897 in Gniezno, Poland and died on 28 Oct 1934 in Warsaw, Poland at age 37. The cause of her death was Septacaemia.

Stanislawa married Michal BORN [16] [MRIN: 9], son of BORN [30] and Unknown [31]. Michal may have been born in Manheim, Germany. He lived in Warsaw and disappeared during WW2 after the Warsaw Uprising and probably died in 1944 on the fourth day of the Warsaw Uprising in Warsaw Poland.

General Notes: Employed by the "Norblin Company" in Zelazna Ulitca in Warsaw. He made church silverware and cultery. Michal was an excellent craftsman making many fine pieces for the family which were confiscated during the war.
He lived in Flat 109 in Panska Ulitca, Central 1, Warsawa. At some stage Michal was conscripted to the Tsar Army in Russia, possibly prior to 1905 as the term of conscription was usually 20 yrs, and he returned to Poland with a chest of red roubles. This bag of roubles was always in Aleksandra's memory, so it is presumed that he would have been very wealthy as compared to local villagers and peasants or many working class in Warsaw. He was of German descent and as he was the thirteenth child in a protestant family he was christened in a catholic church as his family were superstitious. This may not have been correct and the reverse could be true. It is believed that he came from Mannheim, Germany. His family possibly lived in Gniezno where he metf Stanislawa when he returned from Russia. They both left for Warsaw There was a great angst in the family not unlike a family feud and very little was said. Stanislawa and later their daughter Aleksandra kept in contact with Elzbieta, Aleks's grandmother, especially after Stanislawa's death in 1934.

19 F i. Aleksandra BORN [14] was born on 1 Dec 1924 in Warsaw, died 9th August 2005 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia at age 80, and was cremated on the 16th August 2005 in Springvale Crematorium, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Aleksandra married Teodor LOTOCKI 2 [15] [MRIN: 7] (b. 6 Nov 1923, d. Feb 1978) in 1956 in Melbourne, Victoria.

Czeslawa WOLINSKI [24] was born on 30 Jun 1904 in Gniezno, Poland and died on 19 Jun 1992 in Trzcianka, Poland at age 88.

General Notes: Aged 88 years at death

Czeslawa married Henryk KUCHARSKI [25] [MRIN: 11] in Gneizno Poland, son of KUCHARSKI [75] and Unknown. Henryk was born on 28 Jun 1904 in Gniezno, Poland and died on 20 Jul 1953 in Stare Kurowo, Poland at age 49.

General Notes: Worked as a surveyor

Czeslaw KUCHARSKI [71] was born on 9 Jun 1941 in Gniezno, Poland and died on 9 Apr 1997 in Trzcianka, Poland at age 55.

Czeslaw married Maria ZACHWYC [88] [MRIN: 36] in Trzcianka Poland.

Janina KUCHARSKI [72] was born on 7 Dec 1944 in Gniezno, Poland and died on 30 Mar 2007 in Trzcianka, Poland at age 62.

Janina married Edward LAGODZKI [113] [MRIN: 43].

Edward WOLINSKI [23] was born on 12 Oct 1906 in Gniezno, Poland, died on 22 Jul 1965 in Warsaw at age 58, and was buried in Powazki Cemetery, Warsaw. The cause of his death was Throat Cancer.

General Notes: Edward and Julia live at Cierpingi 13 till 1939. From 1939 to 1945 the flat was occupied by Germans.
Edward was the Headmaster of a boys school and lived in Gniezno, his wife Julia was the Headmistress of the girls school. Edward was taken away by the Germans to Auschwitz in 1939 and then to Oranienburg where he was eventually freed by the Americans. He went to Lubeck, Germany, where he founded a school for Polish children.

He returned to Poland in 1947 and studied at the University of Poznan and completed a Masters of Philosophy in 1950.
He divorced from his wife Julia and married Cecylia Polcyn who was from Gniezno

He then lived in Warsaw and died in 1965.
He is buried in the Powaski Cemetery, Warsaw, Poland.

Cecylia died in 2001 and is also buried at Powaski Cemetary.

There were no children from both marriages

Edward married Julia [29] [MRIN: 13]. They had no children.

Edward next married Cecylia POLCYN [44] [MRIN: 18]. Cecylia was born in 1908, died in 2001 at age 93, and was buried in Powazki Cemetery, Warsaw. They had no children.

Roman WOLINSKI [21] was born in 1918 in Gniezno, Poland and died on 24 Dec 1940 in Gniezno, Poland at age 22 He was Crushed to death in a truck accident.

Birth Notes: Artist; the youngest;

Death Notes: Died in a car accident during WW II

General Notes: Worked in commerce and trade. Finished school as a salesman/ buyer and worked in warehousing. For a short time he worked in a German Magazine (warehouse), foodstore. At Xmas time trucks were carrying large casks of wine. A truck was rounding a corner when it tipped and lost its load as the casks were not tied down. The casks rolled onto Roman and crushed him.

Aleksandra married Teodor LOTOCKI 2 [15] [MRIN: 7] in 1956 in Melbourne, Victoria, son of Teodor LOTOCKI 1 [122] and Irena [123]. Teodor was born on 6 Nov 1923 in Czestochowa, Poland, died in Feb 1978 in Box Hill, Hospital, Melbourne, Victoria at age 54, and was buried in Feb 1978 in Springvale Crematorium, Melbourne, Victoria.

RATUSZNY FAMILIES - GNIEZNO POLAND

Research completed by Wieslawa Ratuszny Henicz at the Gniezno Archives September 2009. Relationships have been changed as further research has shown that Michal Ratuszny is not the brother of Elzbieta and Anna Ratuszny as was first thought. Both families lived at Cierpegi 13 Gniezno so are probably related. The following scenario is possible:

Wojciech/Adalberus and Marianna Chojnacka had three sons that we have been able to verify:

Jacobus Ratuszny (1788), Tomasz Ratuszny (1792 - 1838) and Walenty Ratuszny (1798)

They probably had other children including a daughter Apolonia Ratuszny born in 1813.

Jan Ratuszny who was born in 1818 in Obora par.sw.Trojca (Fara) married Marianna Jozwiak who was born in 1823 in Obora. They were married on the 19th November 1843 in Gniezno, par.sw. Trojca. It is possible that Jan Ratuszny is the son of Jacobus Ratuszny and Marianna Lewandoska.

Jan married Marianna JOZWIAK [225] [MRIN: 91] on 19 Nov 1843 in Gniezno, par.sw.Trojca. Marriage status: married. Marianna was born in 1823 in Obora Gniezno Poland.
